The American defense company Anduril Industries has successfully tested a prototype of its new low-cost cruise missile Barracuda-500 from a ground launch platform.
This project, which is fully funded by the company's own resources and is also being developed with the support of Taiwan, aims to create low-cost and mass-produced long-range weapons.
According to Anduril, existing analogs are too expensive and complex to manufacture, using too many costly production technologies instead of cheaper and scalable ones like metal 3D printing, various composites, and plastic.
The Barracuda-500 is equipped with a solid-fuel booster engine for ground launch, and according to the developers, it can be launched from already existing platforms in service, such as HIMARS, Harpoon, and Patriot launchers.
By the end of next year, the company plans to enter serial production, capable of producing “thousands” of Barracuda-500 cruise missiles annually.
